Gaara's sand occasionally moves according to its own will, so to speak. Specifically it will defend him from attacks he's unaware of and (very occasionally) attack someone attempting to harm him. It will also lash out if he's under extreme emotional duress.

If you could like your character to get past this defense/avoid being attacked while antagonizing Gaara for any reason, please let me know so we can work something out!
